welcome to the new blog

hello

I’m very excited to finally get this thing live. And also to be on nowincolour.com – after owning this domain for eight years.

If you never saw my old blog – you can find it here. If you’re familiar with the old one, you might be thinking things like ‘huh’ or ‘oh!’. You’ll also notice a few key differences to the old design, including being much bigger and having no side columns.

some explanations

1. I ditched the side columns because people just don’t click them – Google Analytics told me. People simply don’t read one of my posts and think: Man, I gotta have more – where’s that ‘archive’ section

2. I made it BIG because the web is just getting big in general isn’t it. I also wanted to be able to show nice sized images and video. Plus I think it will be nice and legible while you sit back in your chair.

3. The ‘tweet this’ button idea might seem faddish, but it feels like the most relevant way of sharing stuff. I also enjoyed designing the little bird.

4. I decided NOT to import my old blog posts. For a couple of reasons. The main one being that they would look terrible in this template. I also like the idea that the old posts remain wrapped in their outdated looking Blogger template.

I’d love to know what you think of the design. Although if you hate it, please be gentle. For instance, if you don’t like staring at a large photo of me on the about page try to avoid saying things like:

“It’s just more self-indulgent nonsense. Big this. Big that. Big head more like. WHICH by the way I see you’ve covered up – to hide your balding no doubt.”

I only really wrote that to show off the new block quote design. Even insults look nice.

hooray

‘Hooray’ indeed. There’s a nice BIG picture from the Boston BIG picture blog.

quick warning

There are still probably some glitches. And the comment form looks a bit funny. I’m going to sort that out soon.

That’s it for now. How very exciting.

  1. i like the extra width, now that more people are running wide-screen monitors it’s good to take advantage and use some of that space.

Thanks Yant. I’m hoping that lots of people have Century Gothic on their computers too. Otherwise all the titles will look a bit odd. But I’m told this is on most machines.
